The mustang breed of wild horses
Mustangs are free-roaming horses in western America. They are wild horses (or more appropriately feral horses, since they are descended from domestic animals).
The mustang breed is descended from horses brought by Spanish Conquistadors in the 1500s.
Some of the horses brought by the Spanish explorers escaped. Some were left behind when the Conquistadors returned to Spain. Others were stolen by Native Americans.
They ended up on the plains of western America.
There they became feral and eventually mixed with horses of other breeds brought by Europeans.
Today the mustang population contains horses with known descent from domestic Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse stallions kept in the area. There are also descendants of draft horses and other breeds.
Wild Mustang horse populations are managed by the Bureau of Land Management and also the United States Forest Service.
Each of these United States government entities has a number of individual areas for which they are responsible for managing the mustang population.
Different mustang horse breeds
There are different types of mustang living in different areas, which each have unique characteristics and conformation. Examples are the Spanish Mustang, Pryor Mountain Mustang, and Kiger Mustang.
Spanish mustangs
Spanish mustangs are a breed of horse descended from the original horses brought to North America from Spain. The breed was founded by enthusiasts who were concerned by the dwindling population of feral mustangs and wanted to preserve horses of the Spanish type.
Spanish mustangs are domestic mustangs with Spanish characteristics under the larger category of Colonial Spanish Horse.
Pryor Mountain Mustangs
Pryor Mountain Mustangs are a population of feral mustangs in the Pryor Mountain Horse Range of Montana and Wyoming, USA. This is one of few feral groups to have been verified by DNA testing to be descended from the original horses brought from Spain to the New World.
Kiger Mustang
This is a unique strain of mustang horse that lives in the Burns District in Southeastern Oregon, USA. They are commonly dun in color. Many are gaited.
The Bureau of Land Management rounds up horses from the two Kiger Mustang herds to help manage the herd populations. When they do, they often return individuals with the special Kiger coloring and physical attributes to the wild.
This helps preserve the uniqueness of this special kind of mustang.
