Your horse’s name is important
Good white horse names often make reference to their coat color in some way.
Any name on the list would make a good barn name, and the short ones can be combined to make show names that will steal the show.
Did you know? True white horses have white hair on top of pink skin. A pure white horse is very rare.
A true white horse usually has brown eyes.
Other coat colors that look white
These colors are technically not white from a genetics perspective: cremello and perlino.
These colors often have blue eyes.

Blue eyes can also come from a piece of genetic code called the splashed white spotting allele. So horses that have splashes of white can also have blue eyes.
Some white horses are referred to as albino.
However, as far as I know (from this paper), there are no real albino horses.
That’s because the genetic mechanism for albinism does not exist in horses. As far as we know.
Most horses that look white are actually grey.
Grey horses are born dark-colored and have dark skin. As they age their hair loses pigment until the hair is fully white, and the skin still dark.
I loved having a white horse as a kid.
My childhood horse, an almost-all-white American Paint Horse.

Although mine was really a colored horse, since he was a Paint Horse.
He had a chestnut medicine cap and chestnut in his tail.
But other than that tiny bit of color, my childhood horse had a pure white coat! It was magical to be a little girl with a white horse.
Famous white horses
Here are some famous white horse names and some facts about the horses:
White chalk horses of Great Britain
Ok, these are not actual horses, but they are so cool, they have to get a mention.
Giant figures of horses have been carved into hillsides around Great Britain.
Some are ancient, like prehistoric. Some are just old, like within the last few hundred years.
They are clearly visible from a distance due to the chalky white soil of England and the rolling hillsides they are carved on.
No one knows exactly why the giant horse figures were made, but throughout all the centuries they’ve existed people have thought it was worth it to keep them clear of weeds and grass to prevent their disappearance.
Marengo
A famous warhorse of Napoleon Bonaparte. Marengo was named after the Battle of Marengo – one of the many through which he carried Napoleon safely.
Marengo was actually a gray horse, but he always appears in paintings as the grey-white color of a mature grey horse. For that reason he gets included in this list.
Interestingly, according to his Wikipedia page, although his skeleton is on display at the National Army Museum of London, Napoleon’s Imperial stable records make no mention of Marengo.
Was there really a horse named Marengo? Maybe another horse was nicknamed Marengo after the battle.
Palomo
Simon Bolivar’s horse Palomo was another historical grey warhorse depicted as white. He may have been truly white, but was more likely grey.
Bolivar rode Palomo in many of his campaigns of liberation.
Topper
The film horse of Hopalong Cassidy in a series of movies from the 1930s-1950s.
A fully white horse, Topper was a perfect movie star horse. He was known as being gentle and patient with fans petting and adoring him.
White Flash
The horse owned by Tex Ritter. Tex Ritter (real name Woodward Maurice Ritter) was a prolific country music singer who was a pioneer of the genre in the late 1920s.
He was also a very successful movie star. Almost all of the different characters he played in westerns were named Tex.
Daenerys Targaryen’s Mare
The fictional character from Game of Thrones – Daenerys Targaryen – is given this beautiful white mare as a wedding gift.
The horse plays a role in 7 episodes of the TV series.
Gem Twist
Gem Twist was one of the most successful Grand Prix show jumpers in history. His career spanned from 1985-1997.
But here’s the craziest thing about this horse: they CLONED him! He has 3 clones, Gemini CL, Murka’s Gem, and Gem Twist Alpha Z.
His clones are breeding studs, and seem to be producing successful offspring. I guess that was the goal. He was too good to live just once.
Actually, Gem Twist is not the only sporthorse to be cloned. The practice is increasing as trainers are wondering what could have been if their best athletes could have produced foals.
…Is your white horse actually gray? Here are some famous grey horses for inspiration.
Desert Orchid
Desert Orchid was a very famous British steeplechaser. His career lasted from 1983 to 1991.
He was one of the most popular British racehorses of all time.
People loved his aggressive style of running at the front of the pack and his huge heart.
Nicolaus Silver
Nicolaus Silver was a British steeplechase racehorse who is famous for winning the 1961 Grand National.
He was foaled in Ireland and began his racing career there before being sold to Charles Vaughan in England.
Nicolaus Silver is one of only 3 greys to ever win the Aintree Grand National.
